I met Vern in Vietnam in 1968, we served together in a infantry unit for a year with the 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One). Vern and I hit it off right away, and we became very close friends. He was funny, happy go lucky, and we shared a lot of great times together, and a lot of terrifying times together, but that's how we became brothers. Vern was a good soldier, and could always be counted on to cover your back, and jump into the thick of it when it hit the fan. I didn't know Vern throughout the majority of his life, but thought of him often. Like most Vietnam Vets, when we came home we just wanted to forget, and none of us guys in Bravo Company were in contact again for the next 35 - 40 years. We started finding one another via the help of the internet and we located 18 of us that survived the years. I started looking for Vern and the guys around 2004. Through the internet I searched Oklahoma cause I remembered he was from there, and so I went on to a lot of high school reunion websites asking if anyone knew a Vern Cooper, and then one day a lady wrote to me and remembered him, and said she got a hold of a family member, and she gave me a phone number, I called it and Vern answered, and after a few choice words of disbelief we spent an hour or so talking, laughing, and remembering, it was very emotional. I tried to meet up with him at one of the Big Red One Reunions, but at the last minute he wasn't able to make it. After that I knew that the only way I was going to see him again was to fly to Texas, and I can't tell you how glad I am that I did that. It was one of the most memorable times of my life seeing Vern again after 50 years. It was as if we hadn't seen each other in six months, we just seemed to pick up exactly where we left off in a rice paddy 50 years ago, it was unbelievable. I thoroughly enjoyed my 3 day stay with Vern, and when I left, we both cried a little, remembering, and knowing we probably wouldn't ever see each other again, and of course we were right. Its a very sad day for me, and I want to let Vern's family, and friends know how sorry I am for their loss. I will be letting the remaining guys from Bravo Company know about Vern. He will be missed by all of us, but never forgotten. I have posted some pictures of Vern along with his brothers from Nam on this site, I hope his family and friends will look at them and know that when called to serve he stepped up along side us, and fought for our country. I won't go into detail, but I want you all to know that you should all be very proud of what a outstanding soldier Vern was, in the affectionate words of a number of us, he was a bad a-- soldier !
I was proud to have served along side Vern, and have always felt privileged to call him my friend. Rest well my friend, i'll be seeing you, and the guys on the high ground soon, well not to soon I hope !
